Solving for Noise, Infection Control During a Major Expansion

A multi-billion-dollar expansion project at a major health system in Northern California recently required the removal of a building’s façade. Although the exposed wall stood behind building wrap and scaffolding, medical center officials were concerned about construction noise negatively impacting patient care.

To solve for this challenge, commercial construction firm McCarthy installed FireblockWall™ as a sound-attenuating barrier behind the scaffolding and building wrap. This reusable one-hour fire-rated modular containment system has an STC rating of 40, so it’s particularly effective at noise reduction.

The FireblockWall, which will be in place for about a year, also installs and disassembles four times faster than drywall, so it can be moved and repurposed easily as needed.

In addition to FireblockWall, the McCarthy team also used RealWall™ to create a number of equipment storage rooms and to maintain the medical center’s infection control efforts. Both FireblockWall and RealWall meet ICRA Class IV/V standards.

This key project represents one aspect of what is being hailed as the largest health system capital program in the United States today, comprising over 800 active projects.
